Devin and Cursor now do the same jobs from opposite starting points. Devin began as Cognition's cloud agent and added an editor, Devin Desktop, and a CLI. Cursor began as an editor and added a CLI and Cloud Agents. Devin's cloud agent comes with Pro at $20 a month, and Cursor's Cloud Agents start at Premium, $30.

## Devin vs Cursor at a glance

Each has a cloud agent that opens pull requests, an editor and a terminal tool. They differ in which one is the main product and which models the plan pays for.

| | Devin | Cursor |
|---|---|---|
| Main product | Devin Cloud, an agent in its own VM with a shell, editor and browser | The Cursor editor |
| Editor | Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf), with the Devin Local agent | Cursor Desktop |
| Terminal | Devin CLI | Cursor CLI |
| Cloud agent | Devin Cloud, from Pro ($20 a month) | Cloud Agents, from Premium ($30 a month) |
| Lowest paid plan | Pro, $20 a month | Plus, $8 a month, without Cloud Agents |
| Teams | At least $80 a month, $40 per full seat | $30, $100 or $200 a seat |
| Models in the plan | Frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and SpaceXAI, open-source models, Cognition's SWE-2 | Cursor's own models: Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5 |
| Claude, GPT, Gemini | Included on Pro and above, drawn from the quota | Premium and above, at API list price from prepaid credit |
| Start from Slack and Linear | Yes, both | Yes, both |
| Start from a pull request comment | `/devin` on GitHub | `@cursor` on GitHub or Bitbucket |
| Testing | Tests the app after opening a pull request and sends a video | Cloud Agents control a desktop and browser and return screenshots, videos and logs |

## Where do Devin and Cursor run?

Devin runs in the cloud first. Cognition's [introduction to Devin](https://docs.devin.ai/get-started/devin-intro) describes a workspace with Devin's own shell, an IDE you can take over, and a browser it uses to read docs and test the web apps it builds. [What is Devin AI?](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/what-is-devin-ai) covers the agent in more detail.

On your own machine, Cognition has two tools. [Devin Desktop](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/devin-desktop) is the editor that was called Windsurf until June 2, 2026. Its [FAQ](https://docs.devin.ai/desktop/devin-desktop-faq) says its local agent, Devin Local, replaced Cascade and "runs the same architecture as Devin CLI." The [Devin CLI](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/devin-cli) is a local agent for your terminal on macOS, Linux, WSL and Windows, and it can also create and steer Devin Cloud sessions.

Cursor runs on your machine first. The editor is the main product, and the [Cursor CLI](https://cursor.com/docs/cli/overview) brings its agent to the terminal. Cursor's [Cloud Agents](https://cursor.com/docs/cloud-agent) run in isolated cloud VMs, so they keep going when your laptop is offline, and you can take over an agent's remote desktop to test its work yourself.

## How do you work with each one?

With Devin, you mostly hand off work and come back to it. Cognition's [first session guide](https://docs.devin.ai/get-started/first-run) suggests starting in Ask mode to plan without changing code, then clicking Send to Devin to run the plan in Agent mode. You pick an agent rather than a model, from Lite for small tasks to Ultra for the hardest ones, or SWE-2, Cognition's own model. Cognition's rule of thumb is that if a task would take you about three hours, Devin can most likely do it.

With Cursor, you mostly work alongside the agent and send some tasks to the cloud. In the editor you pick Cloud in the dropdown under the agent input. In the CLI, a message that starts with `&` goes to a Cloud Agent, and you can follow it later on the web or on your phone at cursor.com/agents.

You can mix the two. Cognition's [Devin Handoff](https://docs.devin.ai/work-with-devin/devin-handoff) plugin lets an agent in Cursor send the current repo, branch and uncommitted changes to a Devin cloud session. It needs a Devin API key.

## Which models do Devin and Cursor use?

Devin's plans pay for models from several providers. Its [pricing page](https://devin.ai/pricing) lists frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and SpaceXAI on Pro, plus open-source models and free use of SWE-2.

Cursor's plans pay for Cursor's own models. Its [pricing docs](https://cursor.com/docs/account/pricing) name Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5, drawn from a weekly pool shared with the Grok apps. Claude, GPT and Gemini aren't part of that pool: on Premium and above you pay their API list price from prepaid credit, and Free and Plus can't use them.

So on Devin, Claude and GPT come out of the plan's quota. On Cursor, they're a separate, per-token cost.

## How much do Devin and Cursor cost?

Devin has Free, Pro at $20 and Max at $200 on [devin.ai/pricing](https://devin.ai/pricing). Its [self-serve plans docs](https://docs.devin.ai/admin/billing/self-serve) say one quota covers Devin sessions, the CLI and Devin Desktop, and that Teams costs at least $80 a month, with $40 full seats counting toward it. Past the quota, extra usage is billed at API pricing. [Devin pricing](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/devin-pricing) explains the quota and seats.

Cursor moved to [The X Subscription](https://x.ai/news/x-subscription) on October 12, 2026, one plan for Grok, Cursor and X. [cursor.com/pricing](https://cursor.com/pricing) lists Free, Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200, before tax. Cloud Agents, Automations and Bugbot start at Premium. [Cursor pricing](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/cursor-pricing) covers the legacy Pro and Start plans, and [Is Cursor free?](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/is-cursor-free) covers the free plan.

For a cloud agent, you pay $20 on Devin and $30 on Cursor. For an editor alone, Cursor Plus at $8 is the lowest paid plan of either.

## How do Slack, Linear and GitHub work with each?

In Devin's [Slack integration](https://docs.devin.ai/integrations/slack), you tag @Devin in a channel, and it replies in the thread with updates and questions. Cursor's [Slack integration](https://cursor.com/docs/integrations/slack) starts a Cloud Agent when you mention `@cursor`. It reads the repo and branch from your message and links the pull request when it's done.

Devin's [Linear integration](https://docs.devin.ai/integrations/linear) starts a session when you assign a ticket to Devin, add a playbook label such as `!plan` or `!implement`, or mention it in a comment. Devin posts progress in the ticket and adds the pull request link. Cursor's [Linear integration](https://cursor.com/docs/integrations/linear) starts a Cloud Agent when you assign an issue to Cursor or mention `@Cursor` and opens a pull request when it finishes.

On GitHub, Devin [answers comments](https://docs.devin.ai/integrations/gh) on pull requests its sessions are working on, and a `/devin` comment on an open pull request starts work. Its pricing page also lists GitLab and Bitbucket. Cursor's Cloud Agents start from an `@cursor` comment on a GitHub or Bitbucket pull request or issue, and Cursor's Bugbot reviews pull requests for bugs and security issues on Premium and above.

## Do both test their pull requests?

Yes, in different ways. After Devin opens a pull request, it [offers to test the app](https://docs.devin.ai/work-with-devin/testing-and-recordings), or does it unasked if you turn on pre-approval, and sends a screen recording of a short test plan run in its browser. Cursor's Cloud Agents control a desktop and browser and return screenshots, videos and logs that show how they checked their work.

## Which should you pick?

Pick Devin if you want to hand off whole tickets from Slack, Linear or Jira and come back to a tested pull request, if your code is on GitLab, or if you want Claude and GPT included in a $20 plan. [Devin vs Claude Code](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/devin-vs-claude-code) compares the same handoff style with a terminal agent.

Pick Cursor if you spend most of the day in the editor and send only some tasks to the cloud, if you're happy with Cursor's own models, or if $8 for more editor usage is all you need. Plan on Premium, $30, if you want its Cloud Agents. If neither fits, [Devin alternatives](https://buildful.ai/knowledge-base/devin-alternatives) lists other options.

## Where Buildful fits

Buildful is a [background coding agent](https://buildful.ai/background-coding-agent): you describe a task in the browser, Slack or Linear, it runs in a private cloud sandbox, runs your checks, tests UI changes in a real browser and opens a pull request on GitHub. That's closest to Devin's cloud agent and Cursor's Cloud Agents. Buildful has no editor.

Smart Mode picks the right open-weight model for each task, and on Pro and Team you can pick a frontier model like Claude or GPT yourself, with prepaid credit or your own API key. Buildful Pro is [$10 a month for 1,000 tasks](https://buildful.ai/pricing), or ₹750 in India, and Team is $40 a month for 3,000 tasks shared by unlimited members (₹3,500 in India). The [Buildful vs Devin](https://buildful.ai/compare/devin) and [Buildful vs Cursor](https://buildful.ai/compare/cursor) pages compare each one directly.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Devin better than Cursor?

Neither is better for every job. Devin is built around handing off a task to its cloud agent and getting a tested pull request back. Cursor is built around its editor, with Cloud Agents for the tasks you send away.

### Does Cursor have a cloud agent like Devin?

Yes. Cursor's Cloud Agents run in isolated cloud VMs, open pull requests, and can control a desktop and browser. You start them from the editor, the CLI, the web, Slack, Linear or a GitHub comment. They need Premium ($30 a month) or above, Teams, Enterprise or a legacy paid plan.

### Which costs less, Devin or Cursor?

For a cloud agent, Devin Pro at $20 a month costs less than Cursor Premium at $30. For editor use alone, Cursor Plus at $8 is the cheapest paid plan of the two. Both top out at $200 a month for one person.

### Can you use Claude in Devin and in Cursor?

Yes. Devin's Pro plan and above include frontier models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and SpaceXAI within the plan's quota. Cursor offers Claude on Premium and above, billed at API list price from prepaid credit, not from the plan's included usage.

### Can Cursor hand off a task to Devin?

Yes. Cognition's open-source Devin Handoff plugin works in Cursor, Claude Code and Codex. It sends your repo, branch and uncommitted changes to a Devin cloud session and returns its link. You need a Devin API key.
