Claude Pro vs Max: which plan you need for Claude Code
Claude Pro costs $20 a month, and Claude Max costs $100 for five times Pro's usage per session or $200 for twenty times. Max also includes Fable models for up to half your weekly limit. Both plans include Claude Code, Opus and Sonnet, so the choice comes down to how much you use Claude.

Claude Pro vs Max: what's the difference?
The difference is usage, Fable and a few extras. The models you can pick in Claude Code are the same, apart from Fable. Here's how the plans line up on claude.com/pricing and Anthropic's support articles:
| Claude Pro | Claude Max 5x | Claude Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly | $100 a month | $200 a month |
| Billing | Monthly or annual | Monthly only | Monthly only |
| Usage per 5-hour session | Pro's allowance | 5x Pro | 20x Pro |
| Weekly limit | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Claude Code | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Opus, Sonnet and Haiku | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Fable 5 and 5.1 | Paid with usage credits | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
| Priority access at busy times | No | Yes | Yes |
| Monthly API credits | None | $100 | $200 |
How much more usage does Max give you?
Max 5x gives you five times Pro's per-session allowance, and Max 20x gives you twenty times. Anthropic's Max article describes the tiers that way, as multiples of Pro, rather than as a number of messages.
Both plans have the same two limits: a session limit that resets every five hours, and a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed time on your account. On both, those limits are shared between Claude and Claude Code, so a long chat in the Claude app and a Claude Code session draw from the same allowance.
One small difference shows up at the limit itself. If you hit it in the middle of a Claude Code response, Claude Code may finish the current step and stop. On Pro that grace applies once per weekly period. On Max it can apply each time you reach a five-hour limit.
Which models can you use on Pro and Max?
Opus, Sonnet and Haiku are on both plans. Fable is where they split. Anthropic's Fable article says Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 aren't included in Pro's usage limits, so on Pro every Fable request is paid with usage credits at API rates. On Max, both Fable models are part of the plan, up to 50% of your weekly limit.
If Fable is the reason you're looking at Max, do the sum on your own usage first. A few Fable tasks a month can cost less as usage credits on Pro than the $80 jump to Max 5x. If you'd use Fable every day, Max is the plan built for it.
When should you upgrade from Pro to Max?
Upgrade when Pro's limits interrupt you most weeks, not when they interrupt you once. I'd look for one of these:
- You hit the five-hour limit in Claude Code several times a week and waiting for the reset costs you real work.
- You run Claude Code sessions in parallel, locally or in the cloud. Cloud sessions share your plan's rate limits, and parallel ones use them up faster.
- You want Fable as a regular model, not a rare one.
The upgrade is prorated: you pay the difference for the rest of the billing cycle. If you're on annual Pro and its unused balance is more than the Max price, Anthropic credits the difference to your account.
Stay on Pro if you hit the limit now and then. Turn on usage credits for the heavy days, and set a monthly cap so the bill stays predictable. The Claude Max plan entry has more on the 5x and 20x tiers.
Where Buildful fits
If what you need is more coding work done each month rather than more Claude, Buildful is a different kind of tool. It's a background coding agent: you hand it a task, and it comes back as a tested pull request on your GitHub repo. Buildful Pro is $10 a month for 1,000 tasks, or ₹750 in India, and Team is $40 a month for 3,000 tasks shared by unlimited members (₹3,500 in India).
Those tasks run on Smart Mode, which picks the right open-weight model for each one. You can still pick Claude yourself on Pro and Team, with prepaid credit from $5 or your own Anthropic API key. See Buildful vs Claude Code for how the two compare.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Max better than Pro for coding?
Max gives you the same models as Pro, plus Fable on the plan, with five or twenty times the usage. It isn't a smarter Claude. It's more of it, which matters if Pro's limits stop you during the week.
Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?
Yes. Claude Pro includes Claude Code in the terminal, the IDE extensions, the desktop app and the browser. It shares Pro's usage limits with your chats in Claude.
Can I switch from Pro to Max in the middle of a month?
Yes. Anthropic charges a prorated amount for the rest of your billing cycle when you move up. If you pay for Pro yearly, any unused balance larger than the Max price is credited to your account.
Can I use Fable without paying for Max?
On Pro, you can use Fable with usage credits, which are charged at standard API rates from a prepaid balance. That suits occasional use. For daily use, Max includes Fable up to half of your weekly limit.
Is Claude Max billed yearly?
No. Max is monthly only. Pro is the only individual plan with annual billing, at $200 a year.
