Claude Max plan: price, usage limits and who it's for
Claude Max costs $100 a month for Max 5x or $200 a month for Max 20x, with five or twenty times the Pro plan's usage per session. It's Anthropic's top individual plan, and both tiers include Claude Code, Opus, priority access at busy times, and Fable models for up to half of your weekly limit.

What is the Claude Max price?
Claude Max costs $100 or $200 a month, depending on the tier, and it's billed monthly only. Anthropic's Max plan article lists both prices for web subscriptions and says mobile prices can differ by app store. The pricing page adds that prices don't include tax.
| Plan | Price | Usage | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited | n/a |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $200 a year ($17 a month) | More than Free | Monthly or annual |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | 5x Pro, per session | Monthly only |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | 20x Pro, per session | Monthly only |
So the Claude Max price is five or ten times the price of Pro. There's no yearly discount on Max, and the Max article says Anthropic has no standing discounts on Pro or Max and that support can't issue coupons.
What do you get on Max that Pro doesn't have?
You get more usage, a share of Fable, priority access, and monthly API credits. The main features in the plan comparison on claude.com/pricing, such as Claude Code, Opus, Research, Claude in Chrome and the Microsoft 365 apps, are on Pro and both Max tiers.
| Pro | Max 5x | Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usage per 5-hour session | Pro's allowance | 5x Pro | 20x Pro |
| Claude Code | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Opus, Sonnet, Haiku | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 | Usage credits only | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
| Priority access at busy times | No | Yes | Yes |
| Monthly API credits | No | $100 | $200 |
| Higher output limits, early access to features | No | Yes | Yes |
The Fable row is the one I'd look at first. Anthropic's Fable article says Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 aren't part of Pro's usage limits at all, so on Pro you pay for them with usage credits. On Max they're included, and you can spend up to 50% of your weekly limit on them. That 50% is part of the weekly limit, not extra on top of it.
The API credits come with a catch. They're for building on the Claude Platform, and Anthropic's Claude Code article says they can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.
How do Claude Max usage limits work?
Max has two limits: a session limit that resets every five hours, and a weekly limit across all models. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time Anthropic assigns to your account, which you can see under Settings, then Usage. Anthropic sets Max's allowance as a multiple of Pro's, and the Max article says it may also add weekly or monthly caps to manage capacity.
Three details change how fast you use it:
- Claude Code shares the same limits. Chats in Claude and sessions in Claude Code all count against one allowance, according to the Claude Code article.
- Cloud sessions count too. Claude Code sessions that run on Anthropic's machines share your plan's rate limits, and running several in parallel uses them up proportionately.
- Fable has its own cap. On Max, Fable can take up to half of your weekly limit. Past that, you switch models or pay with usage credits.
If you hit the five-hour limit in the middle of a response, Claude Code may finish its current step and show "Usage limit reached · wrapping up". On Max, that grace can apply every time you reach a five-hour limit. On Pro, it applies once per week.
What happens when you run out of usage on Max?
You have four options: move from 5x to 20x, turn on usage credits, buy API credits through a Console account, or wait for the reset. Usage credits are prepaid funds charged at standard API rates once you pass a session, weekly or Fable limit. You can set a monthly spending cap and an automatic top-up.
Moving up a tier is prorated. Anthropic charges the difference for the rest of your billing cycle, and if you claimed API credits, you get a prorated share right away. If you're on an annual Pro plan and its unused balance is larger than the Max price, the Max article says the difference is credited to your account.
Who should pay for Claude Max?
Pay for Max when Pro's limits stop you more than once or twice a week and Claude Code is where you do most of your work. That's my rule of thumb, and here's how I'd split the tiers:
- Max 5x ($100) if you use Claude Code most days and keep hitting Pro's five-hour limit, or you want Fable without paying for it as you go.
- Max 20x ($200) if you run several Claude Code sessions in parallel, lean on cloud sessions, or use Fable for long tasks. Parallel sessions draw from the same limits, so they're what pushes people from 5x to 20x.
- Stay on Pro ($20) if you hit the limit now and then and can wait out a five-hour reset. Usage credits cover the odd heavy day.
If you're deciding between the two plans, Claude Pro vs Max goes through that choice in more detail.
Where Buildful fits
Buildful is a background coding agent. You describe a task in the browser, it works in a private cloud sandbox on your GitHub repo, runs your checks, tests UI changes in a real browser, and opens a pull request for you to review. Pro is $10 a month for 1,000 tasks, or ₹750 in India. That's a tenth of Max's $100 entry price. Team is $40 a month for 3,000 tasks shared by unlimited members (₹3,500 in India).
The difference is the model. Max gets you Claude, in your own terminal or in Anthropic's cloud. Buildful's included tasks run on Smart Mode, which picks the right open-weight model for each task. When you want Claude, pick it yourself: on Pro and Team, Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Fable 5.1 and Haiku 5.5 are in the model picker, paid from prepaid credit (from $5) or billed to your own Anthropic API key. The Buildful vs Claude Code page has the side-by-side.
